Do Kids Need After Sports Snacks? How to Make a Difference (Without Being a Jerk)

Well, it's donut day today...doughnut day?...Sabotage my healthy eating efforts day? 🤦‍♀️ "Everything in moderation" for a celebration day?
⚽️🏀🏈⚾️🏒⛸🏊‍♂️

Last game of the year for my 8yo, and I know we're getting doughnuts. (I offered to bring the drink. It will be water in paper cups.) 🍩🍩🍩

Next season I'm determined to be more prepared, to talk to the coach before anything gets started, and Sally Kuzemchak of Real Mom Nutrition inspired me (and gave practical tips) to do it!! 👍

She founded the SNACKTIVIST movement, 👏🙌 and it deserves to sweep the nation and get into every youth sport just like...well...just like Gatorade and doughnuts have, actually! 😂

In this short interview, you'll learn:

✅ Why this registered dietitian is all about practical balance and real life -- but she was still appalled at the after-sport snacking she experienced almost 10 years ago! 😱 🍪 🍰

✅ Her process for speaking to coaches and camp directors at the beginning of a season (and she even shares the templates she uses for emails, see below).

✅ What she recommends parents DO bring to games (instead of focusing on the DON'T) 🍎🍏🍐🍊🍌🍉🍇🍓🍒🍑🥝

✅ When she thinks it's time to just ditch the snacks all together... ❎

✅ The purpose of a celebration 🍭

✅ What the American Academy of Pediatrics says about sports drinks (and why "zero cal" options really aren't any better) 👩‍⚕️

✅ How YOU can join the Snacktivist movement and truly speak what others are probably thinking in their heads anyway!!! #bebrave 💪

Yassssssss! I'd say that's worthy of even more than a participation award! 🎖

✔️ What is SNACKTIVISM, in Sally's words:

"Snacktivism is a grassroots effort to stop this unhealthy eating pattern–for the sake of our kids’ health. We owe it to our children to equip them with healthy eating habits.
Snacktivism is about finding a better way.

It’s about thinking twice before serving snacks, about considering whether kids actually need a snack. And if they do, it’s about finding a better choice. It’s about offering whole foods and about making fruits 🍎🍊🍌 and vegetables 🥒🥕 the default.

Snacktivism is NOT about giving up cookies and cupcakes. Instead, it’s about putting them back in their place as special occasion foods, not every day choices." 🏅

✔️ WHAT SNACKTIVISTS DO

🔹 "Volunteer to bring fruit, veggie trays, and other healthy food to events" 🍏
🔹 "Talk to teachers and principals about the kinds of snacks served in the classroom" 🗣
🔹 "Ask coaches if they can institute a healthier team snack policy—or eliminate snacks entirely" 😁
🔹 "Mobilize parents at school, church, and sports teams" 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
