Watching ORCA at NIGHT in ORKNEY!

We're back in Orkney and have a late night (4pm!) encounter with some of the famous 27s Orca (killer whale) pod including the impressive Bull 72! A pod of Orca had been seen earlier in the day near Shapinsay so we took a gamble and searched and waited around the top of mainland Orkney until the light was fading.

The pod was then seen entering Kirkwall harbour as we were just around the corner! So we quickly jumped in the van and got there as soon as possible where we were so lucky to spot their dorsal fins piercing the surface just off one of the piers as the light was fading.

The light conditions made it near impossible to get any decent footage but we were just so happy to have see them after waiting for them all day, hours after the initial report. The hours of light in December around Orkney are extremely short so it was a battle against the clock and we just made it!

The 27s Orca pod are currently being seen in split numbers, we were able to see 5 members (out of 9) in this encounter and stay tuned for an epic encounter we had with the other members in the coming days around Orkney too!

The 27s pod is one of our favourite pods of Orca to see around Scotland and feel so lucky to have any type of encounter with these amazing animals, whether it be near or far, light or dark!
