In this episode of 2TheBarn Chats With... we have a fascinating chat with British Equestrian Performance Director, Dickie Waygood MBE, talking about his unplanned army career, how he set his sights on and achieved becoming Riding Master of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (with some hair raising stories along the way), competing the Queen’s horses and what makes Valegro such a special horse.

Dickie Waygood MBE tells us what his first thoughts were after winning Gold medals at the London Olympics, what characteristics he looks for in a top notch team horse, that sticking to a system to rely on in the heat of competition gives the riders the confidence to do well at top level and having back up plans.

"Train hard, fight easy" is an army mantra that he has carried through to his current role. Hear about this and many more useful piece of advice, including that for young riders wanting to make a career as a professional athlete.

We filmed this interview just before the British Olympic Eventing long list was announced, so Dickie Waygood explained the process for long listing and shortlisting riders across the three Olympic disciplines as well as Britain’s expectations for equestrian medals at the Tokyo Olympics.
