National Register visit 191: Gartz Court 📍745 N. Pasadena Ave, Pasadena

From 1910-1930, you could barely turn a corner in Pasadena without encountering a new bungalow court under construction. Built in 1911, Gartz Court is the second oldest in the city, and the oldest one still in its original configuration. It’s usually attributed to Myron Hunt & Elmer Grey (though architectural historian Robert Winter says Sylvanus Marston, and one tends not to argue with Robert Winter). Whoever designed it, they did a marvelous job integrating craftsman and Tudor revival styles on the six units here, facing each other from across an oval walkway lined with rose bushes.

Gartz also stands apart for the remarkable story of its preservation. I don’t want to give too much away, but suffice it to say, Gartz used to be two miles east of where it is now. It’s a pretty remarkable story – there’s a reason that Claire Bogaard, former Executive Director of Pasadena Heritage, told me that Gartz Court is “my most favorite historic preservation project.”

I’m visiting all the LA landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places. Read about this one and many more at Etandoesla.com: https://etandoesla.com/191-gartz-cour...
