ঘড়ির কাঁটায় তখন রাত বারোটা বেজে তেরো মিনিট- গ্রেগারিয়ান ক্যালেন্ডার অনুযায়ী ২’রা পেরিয়ে ৩’রা ডিসেম্বর, ১৯৮৪। ততক্ষণে সবার বোঝা সারা কী সর্বনাশ ঘটে গেছে। মধ্যপ্রদেশের রাজধানী পাঁচ লক্ষ মানুষের শহর ভূপাল সেই রাতে যেন মৃত্যুপুরী। পৃথিবীর ইতিহাসে ভয়ঙ্করতম শিল্প বিপর্যয়ে কত মানুষ শেষ পর্যন্ত মরেছে তার কোনও হিসেব নেই। সরকারি মতে তিন হাজার ৭৮৭। বেসরকারি মতে ২০ হাজারের বেশি।

ভূপালে ইউনিয়ন কার্বাইড ইন্ডিয়া লিমিটেডের কীটনাশক তৈরীর প্ল্যান্টের ভূগর্ভস্থ ট্যাঙ্ক থেকে বিষাক্ত মিথাইল আইসোসায়নেট বা মিক গ্যাস লিকের ঘটনা নিছক একটি দুর্ঘটনা ‌নয়, এটা একটা হত্যাকান্ড বলা যায়। যার জন্য কাউকে কোন‌ও শাস্তি পেতে হয় নি। মৃতদের পরিবার এবং আহতদের ক্ষতিপূরণ দেওয়ার নামে যেটা হয়েছে তাকে নিষ্ঠুর তামাশা বললে ভুল হয় না।

Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, a city of five lakh people, was like a city of death that night. There is no count of how many people died in the worst industrial disaster in the history of the world. According to the government, 3,787 died; according to the private sector, more than 20,000.

The incident of the leak of toxic methyl isocyanate, or MIC gas, from the underground tank of the pesticide manufacturing plant of Union Carbide India Limited in Bhopal was not just an accident; it could be called murder, for which no one was punished.
