Distance can be both a shield and a burden at the same time in the relationship a doctor has with his patients. This is what Stefanos tries to explain with real examples from his career as a doctor, from being a surgeon in a hospital to working with MSF in a refugee camp in Lesvos. //Short Bio: Stefanos Tsallas studied Medicine at the Kapodistrian University of Athens. He took on specializing in general surgery in Athens, and thus started to love trauma and reconstructive surgery. Later on, he moved to England where he completed his master’s degree in Surgical Science at the Imperial College. Although he intended to only stay there for one year, he ended up staying for four and worked as a plastic surgeon. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and while on a break from surgery, he came across Doctors Without Borders. He worked with them at Lesbos on the refugee crisis. He states that this experience changed his way of thinking and the way he practises medicine. These days, he’s constantly studying: he’s working on his diploma in Global and Humanitarian Medicine and observing peculiar, exotic microorganisms through microscopes.
