Grand Portage State Park | The Tallest Waterfall in MN | Minnesota's North Shore

The "hike" we took at the Grand Portage State Park is probably the easiest along The North Shore. The trail to the tallest waterfall in Minnesota is a short 1/2 mile round trip, with a mostly paved trail and a boardwalk to the High Falls, where water falls 120 feet down to the Pigeon River. This park is on the U.S. and Canadian border, so technically these upper falls aren't entirely in Minnesota.

The these falls were a serious obstacle to river travel, so a "carrying place," or portage, was necessary. American Indians created the ancient nine-mile trail from Lake Superior to bypass the falls. This trail became known as "The Grand Portage."
