Per Pat: I’ve talked frequently on the channel about a metaphor that informed my development of curriculum throughout my almost 40-year-career as a high school English teacher, and it is this same metaphor that I bring to my reading today. Early in my teaching career, I had the great fortune of studying with a brilliant teacher, Emily Style, who published her theory of curriculum as window and mirror (published in Style, Emily. “Curriculum as Window and Mirror.” Listening for All Voices, Oak Knoll School Monograph, Summit, NJ, 1988, and Style, Emily. “Curriculum as Window and Mirror.” Social Science Record, Fall, 1996. You can read Emily's work here:
Emily wrote about the need for curriculum to function as both window and mirror to reflect a multicultural world. She wrote about students needing to be able to look through window frames to see the realities of the lives of others. Additionally, she said, students need to be able to look into mirrors as well to see their own reality reflected as part of a larger human experience. I think these metaphors can easily be transferred to one’s reading, so I have created this NEW Windows and Mirrors Reading tag. I hope that everyone watching will consider giving this one a go as a way of talking about some of the important books in our lives.
