Our month-long road trip through Ecuador introduced us to the diverse cities of Manta, Montañita, Cuenca, Riobamba, Baños de Agua Santa, Quito and Salinas. Each city had its own charm and personality, and there was so much to capture in one video. Therefore, we’re breaking down the trip into a few parts: the coast and the interior. The interior will feature more of the city life with weathered architecture, shopping plazas, volcanos, indigenous communities, and the exact spot where you can stand in both the Southern and Northern Hemisphere. The Ecuadorian coastline truly has something for everyone. Manta, the sleepy fishing village where expats retire, is the place to spend the days strolling the beach and the nights imbibing at the different craft beer breweries. Montañita is the playa for travelers who like to be in the mix of umbrellas, music, and party at “Cocktail Alley”. We got away for a bit to hike the rocks on the far end of the beach to see the surfers and the waves crash. Surfers and scuba divers looking for a calmer haven to walk around barefooted and swap stories about their day in restaurants with sandy floors should look to Puerto Lopez. We saw a pod of dolphins, a humpback whales family, and octopi on our scuba dive day. The most western point of Ecuador is La Chocolatera in Salinas, a quiet place to watch sea lions play and the swirl of crystal blue waves crashing against the rocks look like chocolate. Shores for people who want to be away from it all and have the full view to themselves can be found in the smaller cities in between.
The drive along the Ecuadorian coast is peaceful with very little traffic and generally unobstructed views of the ocean. Towns along the way range from busy cities with excellent restaurants to blink-or-you’ll-miss spots with makeshift wooden huts where locals peddle food, treats, and souvenirs.
