Convex and concave lenses are two types of optical lenses that are commonly used in various optical devices like cameras, eyeglasses, microscopes, and telescopes to manipulate the way light rays converge or diverge.

A convex lens, also known as a converging lens or a positive lens, is thicker at the center than at the edges. It causes parallel light rays to converge or come together at a single point called the focal point on the side opposite to the source of light. This focal point is also known as the "real" focal point. Convex lenses are used to correct farsightedness (hypermetropia) and can magnify objects. They are commonly used in magnifying glasses, cameras, and telescopes.

A concave lens, also known as a diverging lens or a negative lens, is thinner at the center than at the edges. It causes parallel light rays to spread out, or diverge, as if they are coming from a single point called the virtual focal point. Unlike the real focal point of a convex lens, the focal point of a concave lens is virtual and doesn't actually converge at a point. Concave lenses are used to correct nearsightedness (myopia) and are often used in devices like eyeglasses and certain optical instruments.
