This week ushered in a new era for the American Legion, which launched the first-ever California Boys and Girls State program. California is the first and only state to make what has been a prestigious government and leadership camp reserved for boys into one that is now coed. The change this year comes after a law passed in 2021 that required California's Boys State and Girls State programs respectively to provide similar resources and curricula to their participants. Boys State had been known for having more resources and a more robust experience for participants than Girls State because the Boys program is held in Sacramento, with access to lawmakers and within miles of the state capitol building, while the Girls program has been held in Southern California. The new law was one of several steps state leaders have taken over the last several years to expand education and leadership opportunities for women and girls in a state that has yet to elect a woman as governor. California has made progress in electing women leaders, with 41% of the state legislature made up of women.
