We just finished cutting our second crop of Roundup Ready alfalfa hay, and this field was a battle! It’s the last one we had to cut, but wild oats have been a huge issue here since last year’s wheat crop. We planted Roundup Ready hay to knock them back, and after a couple seasons, this field should finally be clean. Josh started the day in the swather, and I traded him off so he could check pivots. The hay is knee-high and just starting to bloom, but some of it is laid down, so I had to constantly adjust speeds between 6–16 mph to get a clean cut. Farming has been stressful lately with old pivots breaking, rotten potatoes rejected at the cellar, and endless maintenance, so running the swather with music blasting was a needed break. This wraps up about 400 acres of hay, and now we’ll let it dry a week before raking and baling. Farming isn’t easy, but we’re pushing through.
