Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated after India carried out what it called “precision strikes” on terrorist camps inside Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir. In response, Pakistan’s military says it shot down two Indian fighter jets and a drone, as both sides accuse each other of aggression and violating sovereignty.

The strikes follow a deadly attack on Hindu tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir, which Delhi blames on Islamabad. Pakistan reports at least seven people killed, including two children, and several more injured. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the Indian action as unprovoked and said a “decisive response” is already underway.

India says it targeted nine militant sites, but Pakistan denies the existence of such camps. A state of emergency has been declared in Pakistan’s Punjab province, with security forces and hospitals on high alert.

The conflict has reignited fears of a wider military confrontation between the nuclear-armed neighbours, with the disputed Kashmir region once again at the centre.
