On 1890 December 29 at Wounded Knee Creek South Dakota soldiers of the Seventh Cavalry surrounded a Miniconjou Lakota camp led by Spotted Elk known as Big Foot. A search for weapons became chaos. Rifle shots and Hotchkiss shells tore through lodges and a snow covered ravine. More than one hundred Lakota were killed including many women and children. Twenty five soldiers died many by friendly fire. This documentary explains how land allotment ration cuts and fear of the Ghost Dance brought families and troops to the same winter bend in the creek. Based on War Department files agency correspondence Lakota testimony and later inquiries we trace the route from Sitting Bulls fatal arrest to the burial party at Wounded Knee. We examine numbers orders and disputed accounts and follow the aftermath at Pine Ridge and in national memory. Wounded Knee remains a marker of policy and loss and a reason the country continues to reckon with its past.
