🔊🔛 Spencerport isn’t as European-inspired as Pittsford, but it was still a lovely pitstop to get some camping vibes; the Cayuga is pretty much a floating RV anyway, and we did bring provisions. But first, we decided to stretch our legs and justify lugging three bikes on the roof all this way by going on a bike ride around town. We rode over the Spencerport Lift Bridge to the Spencerport Depot & Canal Museum—which doubles as a very clean, shower/bathroom facility for campers—then to the town gazebo where a big beer festival was being set up. It wouldn’t open for a few days, so we rode back over the canal to the @ErieCanalwayTrail, part of the longer Empire State Trail, the old towpath converted to a hiking and biking path along the entire 360-mile stretch of the #ErieCanal. I ventured farther than the others to get some miles in, but fortunately turned back just in time to arrive back at the Cayuga before the surprise torrential downpour. I dried off for wine and cheese, along with new faces that popped into check out the boat: @anna_staropoli’s partner Ian and his dad, who just so happened to be in the area.

@FrisbieRichard manned the gas grill to make rain- and water-fountain-soaked corn, plus burgers adorned with the fried eggs I whipped up in the galley. @Anna_Staropoli tended to the sides, and ultimately we had a lovely dinner after the storm, in a covered picnic area along the canal. Gin, wine, Spanish cider, and Pittsford Dairy Farms milk substituted for s’mores in the absence of a campfire.

For those who know my camping behavior, it wouldn’t be a camping trip without making a #shakshuka for breakfast in the morning, so that’s just what I did, with help from @anna_staropoli on chopping duty. Pan-made lamb sausage was mixed into a gravy of tomatoes and red peppers—with garlic, onions, and spices I keep in my car, of course—a flavorful sauce for poaching half a dozen eggs. Everything was topped off with feta and cilantro for a perfect breakfast on the Erie Canal, one that we gathered was the first of its kind in the region. — Shakshuka is served, in Spencerport, NY, USA.
