Overview

Large exterior suspended organic sweeping sculptural artwork. Inspired by the organic forms of the surrounding nature, organic developments, and soft flowing curves, this suspended sculpture resides on a campus in the heart of Torrey Pines scientific research area. We wanted to capture the energy of all our inspirations into a unique form that was beautiful and inviting to all guests. Hovering 20' off the floor, this piece spans the entry corridor of this main entry way 50' long as it floats between the buildings. Created by attaching aggregating wood members to a sweeping and rotating metal spine, this structure is suspended over the campus’s central staircase, over 35’ in the air.

Goals

Our intention was to provide artwork that would compliment the existing building with it's strong linear form by not competing with it, but standing in juxtaposition to the structure in an organic and fluid manner. The school or flock of shapes create a dynamic form that represents the cumulation of ideas on this campus flowing forward in a beautiful and effective way to a better future.

Process

We worked closely with the project managers in order to reach their intended goals and timeline. We in conjunction developed some other features on the ground for the campus that uses similar materials so that they will all tie together. These elements also integrated fallen trees from the lot in order to upcycle them into features for the campus.
