Desert Spirituality with Brother Gary Paul Nabhan, PhD

The purpose of ESR's guest lecture series is to connect with scholars from around the globe who are engaged in critical work across the disciplines of ecology, spirituality, and religion. Through these conversations, we aim to foster dialogue, expand the field, and create connections that deepen our understanding of these disciplines. This series offers a platform for scholars to share their research and insights, helping to grow our academic community and – perhaps – inspire future scholarship.

Speaker Bio:
Brother Gary Paul Nabhan, PhD is an Agricultural Ecologist, Ethnobotanist, Ecumenical Franciscan Brother, and author whose work has focused primarily on the interaction of biodiversity and cultural diversity of the arid binational Southwest. He serves as Professor Emeritus and the Kellogg Endowed Chair in Southwestern Borderlands Food and Water Security at the University of Arizona. He has visited monasteries in contemplative desert spiritual traditions in 6 countries and is a graduate of Richard Rohr's two-year program at the Living School with the Center for Action and Contemplation in New Mexico.

This month, Gary is releasing two new books:
Against the American Grain: A Borderlands History of Resistance
Chile, Clove, and Cardamom: A Gastronomic Journey into the Fragrances and Flavors of Desert Cuisines

His book Agave Spirits: The Past, Present, and Future of Mezcals won a 2024 James Beard Media Award.
