“I don’t think that means MBS is somehow prepared to sell out the Palestinians,” says Michael A. Ratney, former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, while reflecting on the evolving priorities of Saudi Arabia under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS).

Ratney notes that although earlier generations of Saudi leadership held deep ideological and political ties to the Palestinian struggle, today’s leadership and younger population are more focused on domestic transformation and international prestige. Yet according to Ratney, bin Salman is “nothing if not a savvy politician” who still recognizes that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict holds symbolic and political significance across the Arab and Muslim worlds.

He argues that despite a generational and strategic shift in Saudi sentiment, bin Salman cannot afford to ignore regional expectations—especially as he weighs the possibility of normalizing relations with Israel. For any such move to be politically viable, Ratney says, “there has to be something in it for the Palestinians.”
