You're using a product right now, and you don't even know it. You're using YouTube. There's a team of designers who spent months thinking about the interface - how to make it just so. They thought hard about navigation, placement, and how people move from one option to another. This is User Experience Design or UX for short. It's one of the most important aspects of building a product of any kind.


In this informative series, we cover principles of User Interface/Experience design with an aim to provide insights into what makes everyday products accessible, and intuitive.


Today we talk about Fitt’s Law

Fitt’s law is named after psychologist Paul Fitts who studied the human motor system. This principle in user interface design states that the size of a button or other UI element should be proportional to the task it performs. Not just that, It’s about reducing the amount of time it takes a user to process and reach a target with their cursor or finger.

For example:

When signing up for Amazon through a multi-step sign up form. You can see that the button for the next phase(sign up button) will be below the last input field.

Take away from this principle are

Make sure that elements are large enough for the action they perform and small enough to avoid overwhelming users.

A touch target should be adequately spaced apart to make it user-friendly.

The placement of touch targets on an interface should make them easy to reach.
