STORYLINE:
Bodies were recovered from the streets of Goma on Thursday as Rwanda-backed rebels sought to exert normalcy after seizing east Congo's largest city.

Civilians told The Associated Press fighters from the M23 rebel group had urged them to reopen their businesses after days of violence.

Much of Goma remained without electricity and water, with some people seen going back to their daily lives as others fled.

"We can see there is calm and stability, there is no more violence," said motorbike taxi operator Jonas Usangize.

Red Cross officers removed bodies wrapped in white plastic bags, while other dead lay in street wrapped in scattered military clothing.

It came after DRC President Felix Tshisekedi vowed “a vigorous and coordinated response” to push back the rebels in his first public remarks since Goma was captured.

But the rebels had reportedly advanced beyond the city toward the center of South Kivu province after taking several towns, including Kalungu, Kanyezire and Mukwinja, according to a local civil society leader and an aid worker in the area.

The M23 rebels in eastern Congo are backed by some 4,000 troops from neighbouring Rwanda, according to UN experts, far more than in 2012 when they first captured Goma.

They are one of more than 100 armed groups vying for control in Congo’s mineral-rich east, which holds vast deposits estimated to be worth $24 trillion and critical to much of the world’s technology.
