Guideline:
The minor pentatonic scale is the basis of Afro-American music - styles such as pop, soul, RnB. The phrase in this exercise can start you off on the way of building your own melodic ideas in those styles - vocal riffs, improvisation, melismas, etc. Maintain a comfortably open mouth and a loose jaw and if you feel like you are tensing up the throat - lighten up the sound and try going into your head register. As always, if you feel it’s getting too high and you are not reaching the notes - stop and wait until the melody goes back in a more comfortable key.

About the exercises:

The vocal exercises are made specially for the music learning platform Omni’s Cool https://omnis.cool/ , by the vocalist Vesela Morova and the piano and French horn player Tsvetan Momchilov.

A total of 13 in number, the exercises come in three versions - a demonstration track and a piano accompaniment track for female and male voice, which you can use as a singalong.

It is important to clarify, that these workouts do not replace the private
lessons with a vocal teacher. They provide an additional tool for practicing and offer a wide array of melodic and syllabic combinations. Our goal is to be of help to music students and their teachers, whether they study or teach voice, music theory or an instrument.

Always make sure you sing the exercises with relative ease and not too loud dynamics. Before you start practicing, first listen to the demonstration track and try to memorise the melody and the syllables of the exercise well.
While singing, if you feel the melody is too high or low for your voice and if you feel
any discomfort or strain in the throat - stop and wait until it comes back to a comfortable key.

Who is Vesela?

Vesela Morova is a jazz vocalist and a vocal teacher, who spent time living and studying in the USA. Since 2012 she has been following her professional path in her native Bulgaria, performing in jazz clubs, theaters, and festivals together with some of the best musicians in the country. Vesela teaches jazz and pop singing at the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv, as well as at a private school in Sofia - Music Box.
