1. The 4-Stroke Cycle Principle
It explains that the engine completes four distinct steps (strokes) to produce power once. These steps happen inside the cylinder:
Suction (Intake) Stroke: The inlet valve opens, the piston moves down, and a mixture of air and petrol is sucked in.
Compression Stroke: Both valves close, and the piston moves up, squeezing the mixture tightly to make it explosive.
Power (Combustion) Stroke: The spark plug fires, igniting the compressed mixture. The explosion pushes the piston down with force. This is the actual "power" moment.
Exhaust Stroke: The exhaust valve opens, the piston moves up, and pushes the burnt smoke out.
2. Main Engine Components
Cylinder Block: The main tube where the piston travels.
Piston & Rings: The moving plug inside the cylinder. It has rings to seal pressure (Compression Rings) and wipe oil (Oil Ring).
Crankshaft: Converts the up-and-down movement of the piston into rotary (round) motion to drive the wheels.
Camshaft: Controls the timing of the valves (when to open and close).
Valves: The "doors" that let fuel in (Inlet Valve) and smoke out (Exhaust Valve).
3. Basic Engine Terminology
Bore: The diameter or width of the cylinder.
Stroke: The distance the piston travels from top to bottom.
TDC (Top Dead Center): The highest point the piston reaches.
BDC (Bottom Dead Center): The lowest point the piston reaches.
Displacement (CC): The total volume of air-fuel mixture the engine can take in (e.g., 100cc, 125cc).
