As part of a panel discussion titled “Measuring Impact in Environmental Education”
WeNaturalists invited Aniket Gupta, a wilderness educator and Managing Director, Aaranyachar to elucidate on the most effective way of assessing whether the curriculums used in educational institutions are climate education friendly.

While discussing the various Indian landscapes he had been working on, he said the first and foremost thing is to: make climate education subjective to the landscape you are working on. For instance, he says, “You cannot talk about kids near tiger reserves to be concerned about polar bears and how melting ice caps will affect them!”. The subject matter needs to be relevant about the tiger reserves: it should include the details about the people, the crop cycles there, how the river is around their landscape, etc. Climate education needs to be boiled down to the topics affecting their backyard, as it makes the most impact.

Aniket says, there’s a flaw existing in the assessment of climate education curriculum. It is the quantitative assessment of the topics being done - according to him and other environmental educators, it should be qualitative. Students need not necessarily score high marks on a particular topic, but instead needs to connect to the topic. They should be asking questions on the topics being discussed, and not listen to the lectures on the subject.

Students should be about to come up with actions, goals, and questions on a particular topic - that is where we get to know that the real impact is happening. It helps develop a sense of ownership of the land, amongst the students.

Once a responsibility is entailed to the children - they start taking care more. This is how protection of landscapes gets enhanced.

So in conclusion: make the kids develop a sense of ownership through the curriculum, help them build actionable goals towards the climate topic, but first, the curriculum needs to be relevant to the subject matter being discussed.
