📍 Western Colorado, United States — near the town of Montrose, carved by the Gunnison River.

This is not the biggest canyon in the U.S.
It’s not the most visited.
But it is one of the steepest and most dramatic.

• In some sections, the canyon receives only about 33 minutes of direct sunlight per day, which is why its walls appear dark for most of the day.

• The Gunnison River drops an average of 34 feet per mile (6.4 m/km) — making it one of the steepest rivers in North America, over five times steeper than the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

• The canyon walls plunge up to 2,722 feet (830 meters) and are composed of Precambrian gneiss and schist, rock formations more than 1.8 billion years old.

• Unlike many national parks, there are no easy or maintained trails to the bottom. Descents are steep, unmarked, and physically demanding.

• Due to its extreme verticality and isolation, rescues are difficult and rare, and self-reliance is essential.

• From the rim, the river is almost silent. At the bottom, it becomes a constant roar, a reminder of the raw power that carved this canyon.
