George is a ‘burden’ on the cusp of adulthood, working in the fields for the village commune and helping the crops grow. Overseen by the priests, he and the other villagers, the ‘birthers’ and ‘makers’, worship the earth, break the machines of the old world, and sacrifice those with harmful thoughts such as friendship, ownership, trade, and preference for family members.
But an uncertainty is building in George’s mind: If they are living in paradise, why is the world filled with the ruins of so many things that no one alive knows how to make? Why do they sacrifice people and the crops still fail? Why is friendship wrong?
He begins to wonder how and and why the communes started, what lies beyond them, and even what would happen if he tried to leave.
