Hello neighbor, this is Curt with etrailer, and today we're gonna take a look at the Benton ShellRaiser roof cargo box, and we're gonna see how it fits with our 2025 Mazda CX-30. So a rooftop cargo box is an excellent way to carry that extra gear or equipment with you on your next trip. Maybe it's some things that you just won't fit in your vehicle with the other cargo that you have in there, or it might be some stuff that you don't want riding in there with you. Maybe you're going on a camping trip or something, and some of your, you know, muddier clothes, your tent, things like that, you wanna store outside of the vehicle just to keep some of those scents and aromas out of there, and just to keep it clean on the inside of the vehicle. The ShellRaiser is gonna weigh about 15 pounds. So it's gonna be very, you know, small and light enough that it's gonna be very portable for you.
It is something that's gonna be easy to take on and off of your roof rack. It's gonna be easy to store somewhere in your garage when you're not using it, and at only 15 pounds, it's something you can get up and down from your vehicle on your own if necessary. However, that 15 pound weight, you do want to take that into account. Whenever you're looking at your rooftop capacity, you will have to include the weight of your cargo container as well as the cargo itself. So the ShellRaiser is going to be lockable.
You will get a set of keys with it, and as we open it up here, one of the things too is that it is gonna be spring loaded here in the hinges. So it is gonna stay open. You're not gonna have to fight that while you sort through all of your gear and cargo. You are gonna get some tie down straps as well. And looking inside here, we do have eight cubic feet of space.
This is a rather tall box too, so you're gonna be able to store quite a bit in here. The other thing is that unlike some cargo boxes out there that have a lot of different ridges and things like that, that can limit you somewhat, you know, to how you lay things out, the only obstacle we would have in here is going to be the clamps that are holding it down to our crossbars. But overall, I mean, there's a lot that you could store up here. I mentioned the tent, you know, your sleeping bags can go in here, any of that, dirty clothes after a camping trip, all kinds of things that you're gonna be able to fit in here pretty easily. Or you know, say you're going on a biking or a cycling trip or a kayaking trip or something like that, your life vests, helmets, all that can go up here, and, you know, stay out of the cargo space inside your vehicle in order to keep that a little bit more clean.
Attaching your roof box to your crossbar is a little bit different than other roof boxes that use more of a clamp system. What we'll have on here is more of a cable system, and it's going to anchor on the front end here of our bracket here, and it'll go underneath the bar and reattach in this section here with a knob that's gonna allow you to tighten and loosen it, just making it more secure up here on your roof rack. So when it comes to how it fits on the CX-30, there are a few things that we want to keep in mind. First of all is going to be our crossbar placement. Now, there are some roof racks that go on the CX-30 that use a fixed mounting point, meaning that they bolt into a specific place up here on your rails, and you don't really have a lot of freedom to move them back and forth. What we have on here is more of a clamp style roof rack. So it goes around the ridge of your rail up here, but what it does is it offers us some freedom of movement back and forth. Now the requirement for the ShellRaiser is that from outside of your back bar to outside of your front bar cannot be more than 29 inches. We've placed our bar so that that measurement comes to 27 and a half. We just wanted us to give us a little bit of extra room, and that is gonna allow us to attach up here. So, double check your crossbar spread. If you have crossbars on your roof already, if they're a fixed mounting point, those mounting points are likely gonna be too wide for this box. But if you have a roof rack that uses this clamp style, that should allow you the freedom to move your bars a little bit further in or out so that they can accommodate this box. So the other thing that we made
