Rather than pressing hard on the paper to get dark values, I will show you how I gradually build up layers in graphite pencil to get the correct values for my value scale. Pressing too hard on the paper can cause pencil marks and it makes it harder to correct mistakes. By gradually building up your shading with pencil you will be able to get your darks darker and your drawing will look softer and more realistic.

After I create my value scale, I use a hole puncher so that I can use my scale as a value finder.
