Twelve years have passed since Brittany Stykes was tragically killed while driving along US 68 in Brown County, yet her family continues to honor her memory and seek justice.

A cross on US 68 marks the spot where Stykes was murdered, and her family remains steadfast in their search for answers.

"It's very rough. Every day we miss her, every day," said Mary Dodson, Stykes' mother.

On the 12th anniversary of her death, Stykes' parents, Mary and David Dodson, are still mourning the tragedy.

"This is our daughter. We should never have had to bury our daughter," Mary Dodson said.

In 2013, Stykes was pregnant and driving down US 68 when she was shot several times. Her 14-month-old daughter, Aubree, who was in the backseat, was also shot in the head but survived. Now 13, Aubree questions what happened.

"We try to let her know the type of person her mother was. Her mother was loving and kind. She loved children; she was so happy to be a new mom," Mary Dodson said.

Brown County Sheriff's deputies have spent nearly $1 million investigating the case, but it remains unsolved.

"There's somebody out there that knows, and we hope the news reaches that person and it weighs on their heart," David Dodson said.

While the anniversary memorial serves as a celebration of Stykes' life, it also highlights the family's ongoing fight for justice.

"You help us in keeping it alive, but not only that, letting everyone know and the police departments that work on it and everything that we're not going anywhere. We want answers; we want this solved," Mary Dodson said.

A $50,000 reward remains for anyone with information leading to her killer. Her parents hope that by keeping the story alive, someone will come forward.

A candlelit vigil for Stykes is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday at her memorial site on State Route 68.
