Описание к видео ENTERTAINMENT DAILY: ENT3- TURNER PRIZE

(25 Oct 2000) English/Nat

Title: Turner Prize
Date: 24th October 2000
Location: London

The TURNER PRIZE, Britain's top art competition, has often been decried as a load of old rubbish by more traditional art critics and indeed, a collection of junk looking like the aftermath of an earthquake is one of the contenders for this year's Turner Prize Exhibition.

Japanese-born artist TOMOKO TAKAHASHI has assembled items including plastic pot-plants, bollards, a defunct photocopier and worn tyres to create her installation Learning How To Drive.

She is one of four artists whose work goes on display at Tate Britain from tomorrow in the build-up to the UK's most prominent arts award to be announced next month.

Last year it was Tracey Emin's work, My Bed, with its soiled sheets and piles of debris, which helped to draw 140,000 people to the Turner Exhibition at the gallery at Millbank, in Westminster, central London.

For 2000, Takahashi has extended the chaos, filling an entire gallery with redundant bits and pieces. Construction site signs hang from walls, a blackboard and office furniture hang from the ceiling.

She has also scoured the cellars of Tate Britain to find suitable material to include in her exhibit.

Tate Britain's communications curator SIMON WILSON said her work was in the tradition of "assemblage" art created in movements like Dada, surrealism and pop-art.

The Turner Prize (worth US$ 30,000) has been criticised in the past for neglecting traditional forms of art, like painting, at the expense of video or installation, but this year painting is a major part of the displays by two artists.

One of them, Hexham-born GLENN BROWN - the only short-listed British-born artist - has presented his re-interpretations of the works of other great painters. In his 1999 painting Oscillate Wildly he stretches Salvador Dali's Autumnal Cannibalism and refines some of the features as well as removing the colours and making it just black-and-white.

Another work, The Tragic Conversion of Salvador Dali (after John Martin), adapts Martin's vision of the Apocalypse and replaces the ancient city of the original with a futuristic space-age city.

The bookies' favourite is Dutch-born MICHAEL RAEDECKER. His delicate work mixes paint on canvas and embroidery, applying threads and wool to a landscape to give texture and detail.

Meanwhile, WOLFGANG TILMANS, a German photographer, has done his best to maintain the Turner Prize's reputation for controversy with close-ups of genitalia and an armpit, along with a naked man bending over. Nothing is left to the imagination.
