Debunking Fasting Myths: Things That Do Not Break the Fast!
Introduction
Ramadan is a month of immense importance for the Muslim Ummah. Questions arise in the minds of many regarding the sighting of the new moon during this month, particularly concerning fasting on the 'Day of Doubt'. Here, we have emphasized the topics of the new moon's appearance, fasting on the Day of Doubt, and the reasons why a fast is not invalidated. Even before the arrival of Ramadan, a sense of excitement is created within the Muslim society regarding the sighting of the new moon. The appearance of this new moon determines when the holy month of fasting, Ramadan, will begin. However, sometimes due to weather conditions or other reasons, differences of opinion arise regarding the moon sighting, which is known as the 'Day of Doubt'. Questions arise in the minds of many as to whether or not one can fast on this day.
Appearance of the New Moon and Shari'ah Rulings
According to Islamic Shari'ah, the beginning and end of fasting in the month of Ramadan depend on the sighting of the new moon. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:--- "Observe fast on sighting it (the new moon) and break (the fast) on sighting it."…(Bukhari and Muslim).
When the moon is sighted on the evening of the 29th of Sha'ban, the month of Ramadan begins the following day. And if the moon is not sighted on the 29th of Sha'ban, then the month of Sha'ban is to be completed as 30 days, and the month of Ramadan begins the day after that.
Fasting on the Day of Doubt
When the moon is not sighted on the evening of the 29th of Sha'ban or there is a disagreement regarding the sighting, the month of Sha'ban is considered to have a 30th day. Fasting on this day is Makruh (disliked). However, it is different if one has been fasting habitually beforehand. That is, until the sighting of the moon is confirmed, one should not fast on this day with the sole intention of Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has forbidden fasting on the Day of Doubt so that the distinction between the fasts of Ramadan and the fasts of Sha'ban remains clear.
Reasons for Fasting Not Being Invalidated
Often, certain events occur that may seem to be reasons for the fast breaking, but in the eyes of Shari'ah, these do not invalidate the fast. It is extremely important to know these matters so that there is no unnecessary fear or anxiety about the fast being invalidated without reason. Some important reasons for which the fast is not invalidated are mentioned below:---
1) Eating or drinking out of forgetfulness
If a person eats or drinks something forgetfully while fasting, their fast will not be invalidated. In this case, eating or drinking must be stopped immediately as soon as one remembers. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever eats or drinks forgetfully, let him complete his fast. For it is Allah who has fed him and given him drink."…(Bukhari and Muslim).
2. Wet dream
If a wet dream occurs while sleeping during the fast, the fast is not invalidated. This is a natural occurrence and the individual has no control over it. Taking a bath to purify oneself is sufficient.
3. Taking injections or vaccines
Taking injections or vaccines that are not nutritious does not invalidate the fast. If nutritious saline-type injections that serve the purpose of food are taken, the fast will be broken.
4. Using Kohl or eye drops
Using Kohl (Surma) or eye drops does not invalidate the fast, even if the taste is felt in the throat.
5. Tooth extraction or bleeding
If a tooth is extracted and a small amount of blood comes out and is not swallowed, the fast will not be invalidated. One must be careful not to swallow blood while rinsing the mouth.
6. Vomiting
If vomiting occurs unintentionally and does not fill the mouth, the fast will not be invalidated. However, if one vomits intentionally or if there is mouth-filling vomiting and it is swallowed, the fast will be broken.
7. Bathing or Rinsing the mouth
Bathing is permissible and rinsing the mouth is also permissible while fasting, but gargling is Makruh because there is a risk of water going down the throat.
8) Swallowing insects or smoke
If a mosquito, fly, or smoke enters the stomach unintentionally, the fast is not invalidated.
Conclusion
Knowing these factors will allow fasting individuals to easily be certain about their fasts and perform their worship without any doubt or hesitation. To observe the holy month of Ramadan correctly, it is essential to have a clear understanding of moon sighting, the rules of the Day of Doubt, and the reasons that invalidate the fast.
