(Shiftry debuting in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire in November 21 of 2002/Whispy Woods appearing as the first boss on Green Green in Kirby Dream Land that was realest on April 27 in 1992)

Both are sentient tree base creature:
(Shiftry is a bipedal living tree that has leafs for hand and its feet resemble Japanese sandals, its ears and nose are long and pointy, and its shoulders are completely round/Whispy Woods is a literal apple tree with a face and with a wooden nose)

Both are guardians of the forest in which they protect:
(Due to how long has shiftry live throughout the year, many citizens often see or call this pokemon as a guardian of the forest/Whispy Woods is often call as protector of the forest as he is often task by King Dedede to protect some artifacts from anyone or protecting the wildlife from danger)
