So most of us are now stuck at home with a lot of free time on our hands. What better way to spend it than by learning some fun new licks? Let me know if you guys want to see more of these in the coming weeks - I took a more relaxed approach to this lesson compared to my usual Spicy Licks videos so if it’s too casual and not in-depth enough then please offer any feedback you might have with a comment.

Anyway, this is a lick I transcribed from an old Joe Bonamassa video where he was demonstrating his rig during a soundcheck. Unfortunately I couldn’t find the original video so I’m guessing it’s been taken off YouTube.

It’s in E mixolydian and as I mention in the video, it’s a fantastic example of the various improvisational concepts you can utilise when you’re improvising with the mixolydian mode. Most guitar players when they first learn the modes of the major scale, tend to face difficulties when it comes to improvising creatively with them.

Besides simply ascending and descending the positions of the scale, they’re not sure what else they can do to make it sound musical.

Mixolydian is a scale that provides you with a bunch of options including pentatonic licks (both major and minor) plus multiple triads and arpeggios. So, you don’t have to stick to strictly ‘modal’ sounding phrases when you’re playing with modes.
