Commissioned in 1923, USS Colorado was the lead ship of her class and one of the first U.S. battleships armed with 16-inch guns. Built between the world wars, she spent years training across the Pacific before being thrust into full-scale combat in World War II.
From defending the U.S. West Coast in 1942 to hammering Japanese positions at Tarawa, Saipan, Guam, Tinian, Leyte, Lingayen Gulf, and Okinawa, Colorado was constantly on the front line. Even after taking 22 direct hits from shore batteries at Tinian and later surviving kamikaze attacks, she stayed in action supporting troops ashore.
Colorado ended the war by sailing into Japan for the occupation, earning seven battle stars. Decommissioned in 1947 and scrapped in 1959, her legacy lives on through preserved guns and artifacts displayed across the United States.
