This is a 5 out of 5 star review for The Blitzkrieg Legend: The 1940 Campaign in the West by Karl-Heinz Freiser. This is the best and most essential book for students of WW2. They must understand Panzer 'lighting war' or Blitzkrieg and comprehend what is real and what is a legendary myth. The key to the German success over the allies was not in the statistical- the material and manpower superiority.

The key was in the Wehrmacht operational and tactical doctrine, which gave their troops better communications, decentralized leadership that focused on initiative, and coordinated combined arms with Panzers and air support. Ultimately these aspects created a much faster decision cycle and combat power focused on decisive points.

The Germans didn't expect to be anywhere near as successful as they were and planned for a longer, more attrition-based conflict. Thus the Legend and Myth of Blitzkrieg was born.. based on accidental success.
