Machlipatnam is a port town on the Coromandel coast of India, once famous for its Kalamkari printed cotton fabrics known world wide as chintz. The root of the term chintz is the Hindi word ‘chint ’. For centuries, the artisans of Machlipatnam created the most amazing floral patterns in vivid colours from natural dyes; however due to the industrial revolution and the use of chemical dyes, this heritage tradition died out.
