Most people don’t know that a composting toilet becomes “safe” after all the pathogen bugs are eaten by the good guys. The good guys need lots of help. They are asleep if the temperature is below 14C and only at a snail pace to 35C. Complete pathogen destruction is guaranteed by arriving at a thermophile (center of compost) temperature of 62° C for one hour, 50° C for one day, 46° C for one week or 43° C for one month. It appears that no excreted pathogen can survive a temperature of 65° C for more than a few minutes. Our membrane heaters under the Natures Head will generate enough heat to get to 65°C inside. They also need lots of nitrogen (in the air). So the turning of the compost is vital to get aeration with the fan running. Our automation turns the toilet automatically when the button is pressed and starts the heater. We expect to have this toilet “safe” in less than 1 hour. Safiery were awarded approval by the Australian Govt to proceed with automating composting toilet based on the extensive research we did. We have mounted a waterproof IP68 temperature sensor inside the bowl of the toilet to complete this study of how long the heater needs to run for and how much turning is needed for optimal results. Once completed, we will commercialise this innovation for all. Until then, Safiery is only implementing automation of the toilet in builds with our Safiery Integrated Display so we can adjust settings and monitor results. The Safiery Integrated Display includes a suite of GARMIN functions in the Vieo Head Unit: Navigation, HEMA, Campgrounds, Fusion Sound, Victron Energy integration, Digital Switching, Tyre Pressure monitoring, airbag control with the Inclinometer: Pitch and Roll and now composting toilet automation.
