About the speaker

Hwee Kuan Lee’s current research work involves the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) research for clinical and biological applications. His laboratory focuses on diverse research activities, including more basic AI centric research as well as AI applications. Clinical application areas include, diagnostics in cancers, spatial omics, cardiology, dermatology and interventional radiology. In the area of biology, Hwee Kuan’s laboratory works on the development of AI in protein science and drug discovery. Hwee Kuan’s primary appointment is as the Deputy Director for Training and Talent development in the Bioinformatics Institute. He also holds multiple adjunct and joint appointments in the local universities and other research institutions.

Details of presentation

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of cardiac mortality in Singapore and worldwide, with 19% of deaths in Singapore due to CAD. Numbers of CAD cases are growing rapidly due to ageing and higher prevalence of diabetes. Computed Tomography Coronary Angiography (CTCA) is the first-line investigator for CAD. Current practice of CAD report generation requires 3-6 hours of a CT specialist’s time for annotating the scans, and with inter-observer variability of 20%. These problems have strongly and severely constrained the effectiveness of CTCA as a diagnostic and research tool. In this seminar, I will report on our platform enhanced by AI technologies for simultaneous reporting of calcium scores, plaque quantification, stenosis and epicardial adipose tissues. It is a “one-stop” platform spanning from diagnosis to clinical, management and prognosis, and aids in predicting therapy response in the pharmaceutical industries.

Please not: this was a hybrid seminar held in-person at the Heart Lung Research Institute - the sound quality is not as good as our usually standard. Our apologies!
