Electrical engineer Dr. Brandon Cochenour says that the fun and exciting part about being a researcher for the Navy is that because the answers they’re seeking are rarely available in a textbook, technical teams are required to work together to discover or even invent solutions, with each member bringing expertise from many different STEM disciplines.

Dr. Cochenour encourages students to apply to engineering schools or major in engineering, even if they don’t know exactly what kind of engineer they want to be. Many curriculums are designed so students don’t have to decide on a specialty right away.

“Take a look at the DoD’s SMART program. It’s a real unique opportunity, not just to have your education paid for, but to land a job at a DoD lab after you're done,” says Dr. Cochenour.
