DeHello, I’m Dr. Connie Webster Associate Provost for Academic Programs and Professor in the Department of Nursing and Allied Health at the University of the District of Columbia and your host for Health Matters. Our purpose is to assist you in managing your health care by providing you balanced information and resources to help you make knowledgeable choices about your health.

In the United States, the prevalence of obesity is increasing in all age groups, including older persons, defined as those 65 years old. Among the residents of the District of Columbia, the prevalence of obesity is highest in Wards 5, 7 and 8 which also correlates to higher prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes for residents in those Wards as well.

Joining me on this edition of Health Matters to talk about the role and the importance of nutrition in the battle against obesity is Dr. Prema Ganganna. Dr. Ganganna is Professor and Program Director for the accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics and also the Graduate Program in Nutrition and Dietetics in the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences or CAUSES for short at the University of the District of Columbia.
