This video tells the full story of IJN Ushio, the only surviving Fubuki-class destroyer of the Pacific War and the only Pearl Harbor survivor of her revolutionary class. From her opening shots at Midway on December 7, 1941, through Coral Sea, the Solomons campaign, Surigao Strait at Leyte Gulf, and her crippled final voyage home, IJN Ushio witnessed the rise and destruction of Japan’s most advanced pre-war destroyers.

We explore why IJN Ushio survived when all twenty-three of her sisters were sunk—examining design, doctrine, deployment, and the brutal mathematics of chance in industrial warfare. This is not a story of glory, but of endurance: escort duty, Tokyo Express runs, late arrival at massacres, and survival through assignments that kept IJN Ushio just outside the center of catastrophe.

By tracing the Fubuki-class revolution, the failure of the decisive battle doctrine, and the grinding attrition of the Pacific War, this documentary shows how IJN Ushio became the last witness to a naval era that destroyed itself.
