Bluegrass Bits 3 -- Old Fiddler's Convention, Galax, Virginia

Every year for decades, before the second weekend in August, the Galax Moose Lodge has hosted the world's oldest and largest Old Fiddler's Convention. Hundreds of musicians converge on the small city nestled in Southwest Virginia's scenic Blue Ridge Mountains to compete for thousands of dollars in prize money, and, even more important for most, the ability to perform in public and pass the night playing Bluegrass, Folk, Old Time and Country tunes in the campground that surrounds the stage.

If you're a fan of genuine music performed by talented musicians, this is a must-see event. We had a great time roaming the campground to experience top-notch playing in an informal setting on Friday night. On Saturday, we set up our chairs on the fairgrounds and watched terrific bands comprised of family and friends compete on stage. In between events, be sure to mosey into town, where you'll find some great restaurants and shops.
