In Michael Keaton's acceptance speech for best actor in a limited series for Dopesick for the Critics Choice Awards, Keaton acknowledged that it was "a little funny to be accepting awards on the backs" of characters struggling with opioid use disorder.

Then he recalled chatting with a woman in her 70s who worked at a coffee shop near where Dopesick filmed in Virginia: "She told me how prevalent the addiction rate and problems is down there in Appalachia," he recalled. He called the women of Appalachia strong and all women who raise the children of those struggling with substance use disorders strong. especially his Mother and his sisters.
