More than four and a half years after the deaths of two staffers at Anamosa State Penitentiary, the family of Robert McFarland is pursuing accountability through the Iowa Supreme Court.

McFarland was one of the two employees killed on March 23, 2021, during an inmate ambush. His family is suing the Iowa Department of Corrections leadership and staff for reckless conduct and negligence, citing overcrowding and understaffing at the prison prior to the attack.

“It's one thing to lose a family member, and then it's another thing for leadership and for the people in power to almost disrespect that loss by refusing to take accountability, by refusing to acknowledge the deficiencies and more importantly correct the deficiencies to make it safer," Robert Rehkemper, one of the attorneys on the case, said.
