In this episode of Chesterfield’s Lost Railways, we continue our journey along the disused Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railway (LD&ECR), exploring the dramatic remains between Scarcliffe and Langwith Junction. Known as the Dukeries Route, this ambitious railway once linked Chesterfield to Lincoln — but today, only fragments remain.

We begin just beyond Scarcliffe, where we’ve been granted special permission to explore some of the most impressive and rarely seen railway cuttings on the line. These deep, hand-dug cuttings are a stunning reminder of the engineering power behind the LD&ECR. Along the way, we uncover infilled sections, lost bridges, and long-forgotten alignments of this abandoned railway.

Our journey ends at the site of the former Langwith Junction station — once a major railway hub and the very reason the surrounding village exists today. Although the platforms and signals are long gone, the railway heritage is still very much present.
