Short History of Clarendon
Before Clarendon became what it is today, thousands of Vietnamese refugees fled and relocated in the neighborhood after the Vietnam War.
Fun Fact:
Clarendon was once known as “Little Saigon”.
Nam Viet is the only Vietnamese restaurant that’s still open in Clarendon today.
According to the Arlington County Cultural Project, about 15% of the Vietnamese refugee community lived in the Washington area during the mid-1970s.
The neighborhood was then home to Vietnamese grocery stores, restaurants, department stores, and entertainment to service the large Vietnamese population in the area.
By then, there was a lot of available and affordable housing. However, that didn’t last long as the Clarendon Metro started to take in major changes. It wasn’t long when rent started to rise.
