The Alabama Theatre was built in 1927 by Paramount Pictures as its flagship theater in the southeast region.

It was constructed to seat 2,500 people, making it the largest theater in the district at the time, at a cost of $1.5 Million, which would amount to over $25 Million today when adjusted for inflation.

One of the things the Alabama Theatre was known for in its early days was its Mickey Mouse Club which was formed in 1933. Meetings were held every Saturday, where the children would perform for each other, watch Mickey Mouse cartoons, and participate in other activities.

The Club also sponsored food and toy drives for the underprivileged. By 1935, the Club had over 7,000 members, making it the largest Mickey Mouse Club in the world.

When the Alabama was built in 1927, films were silent and required a musical accompaniment. This was typically provided by an orchestra or theater pipe organ.

The Alabama Theatre's organ is a Crawford Special-Publix One Mighty Wurlitzer. Only seventeen examples of this model were built, and the Alabama Theatre's is one of only three still installed at their original sites.

In 1998, the Alabama Theatre underwent extensive renovation by the owning company Birmingham Landmarks, which also owns the Lyric Theatre across the street.

Doors open one hour before showtime. Each event begins with a sing-along to music performed on the theater’s Mighty Wurlitzer organ.

Tickets for most movies are $10 each, and admission is free for children 2 and under.
