Yes, it’s true—tiny mites live in your eyelashes. 😳 They’re called Demodex mites, and while almost everyone has them, sometimes they can overgrow and cause major eye issues like: itchy or red eyelids, recurrent styes and chalazion, meibomian gland dysfunction, and even dry eye disease.
In this video, I break down frequently asked questions such as:
What are demodex mites? Demodex mites are a family of microscopic mites that live in or near our hair follicles. They are often found at the base of our eyelashes!
Should I be worried about demodex mites? Most people have demodex mites in small quantities and they may not cause any problems when there are only a few of them, however demodex mites can be found to cause large infestations and can lead to other complications and eye conditions (such as eyelid styes, chronic blepharitis, dry eyes, itchy eyes, redness and more)
How to get rid of Demodex Mites: There have been several treatments for demodex mites published on over the years. Some treatments include that of tea tree oil eyelid hygiene products, microblepharoexfoliation, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), as well as some medications.
One recent medication for the treatment of Demodex Blephraritis is that of Xdemvy (the first FDA-approved treatment for Demodex blepharitis).
This is a must-watch if you’ve been struggling with eye irritation, dryness, or mystery bumps on your eyelid.
As discussed in the video, many doctors still recommend eyelid cleaning every day with an eyelid hygiene cleanser to help prevent blepharitis, including that of demodex blepharitis.
