Żeleński was born in Grodkowice. He was a representative of neoromanticism in Polish music. Since early days Żeleński showed interest in chamber music. While in secondary school, he wrote two quartets and a trio that, however, have not survived to our times. Later chamber pieces: Sextet in C major, Op. 9 and Wariacje na temat własny (Variations on an Original Theme) for string quartet, Op. 29 Żeleński composed while studying first in Prague and later in Paris. He died in Kraków.

Żeleński dedicated his violin sonata to Princess Marcelina Czartoryska, née Radziwiłł (18 May 1817, Podłużne − 5 June 1894, Kraków) who was a prominent Polish aristocrat and pianist.
She was taught piano by Carl Czerny in Vienna and by Frédéric Chopin in Paris. She gave concerts across Europe, often with prominent musicians such as Franz Liszt, Pauline Viardot and Henri Vieuxtemps.
In Paris she became a prominent guest at the Hôtel Lambert, bought by Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, a close relative of her husband Aleksander. In 1849 she was present at the deathbed of her teacher and friend, Frédéric Chopin.
