Notes:
a. Hi writers, my name is Jean Nicole Rivers, I am the founder of Simply Stylus writing software (contact information) as well an award-winning novelist. I have written and published 2 psychological horror novels, Black Water Tales: The Unwanted and Black Water Tales: The Secret Keepers along with countless other short stories and flash fiction that you can read on my website (www.jeannicolerivers.com) and I am currently working on my new novel with the working title, To The Moon and Back.

a. Today I'm talking about getting those creative writing juices flowing. Some of us know that we want to write a book, we know exactly what we want it to be about, some of us know what genre we want to write, but not the exact topic and some of us have no clue what we want to write, we just want to write it, but the fact is that we ALL need help sometimes with our creative mojo. This is related to some of the "I'm just not inspired" talk I keep hearing but let me let you in on a little secret. Writers are not always inspired, but they write anyway.
b. There are times when inspiration is going to hit you like a ton of bricks but there will be many more times that it won't. Sometimes you have to create your own inspiration and here are some of the ways that work for me.
i. I like to go places that dig up emotions. I always find inspiration in places like art museums and the theater. For me, these are the types of places that make me feel things and when you're writing and/or preparing to write you have to feel things, which is actually one of the really scary parts of being a writer. Fully opening yourself up to emotions of you characters can be really overwhelming. These places cost money and can be inconvenient to get to, so there's an alternative, watch a bunch of your favorite movies. Watch movies that are similar to what it is that you want to write. Yes, I am giving you permission to sit around and binge watch your favorite movies as part of your writing process.
ii. Start a Pinterest board for your story. This is one of my absolute favorite parts of writing my story because I get to spend hours scrolling through Pinterest as part of my writing process so no guilt. Once you create your Pinterest board, pin pictures that remind you of the characters, settings and scenes in your book and refer to them while writing to add a more 3dimensional flavor to your story. One of my favorite things that people tell me about reading my books is that it's a very visual experience for them. They say that my words and explanations really help them to see the story in their heads and that's my goal because that is one of the best ways to keep your reader engaged.

a. So let's recap quickly:
i. Sometimes you can't wait for inspiration to find you, you have to go out and find it.
ii. Try to put yourself in places that stir up emotion for you and have a deliberate focus on the story that you want to tell when you are in these places. How can the emotions that you generate in these places connect you to your story or better yet, connect your story to the reader?
iii. Start a Pinterest board for a visual representation of the themes of your story and have fun with it.
