“It’s Friday! Time for another weekly update.

This week, Engineering and Public Works began reconfiguring the access points at the Concord Park Fishing Pier in an effort to improve safety and accessibility. The plan calls for widening the current dock roadway inside the park and creating new turnaround areas to make it easier for visitors to come and go. The main entrance/exit will remain open, but we will permanently close the other exit near the curve due to its poor line of sight. Work should be finished by Thanksgiving.

The Convenience Center at Dutchtown Road will experience some service interruptions next week as crews replace the compactor that accepts bulky items. The center will still remain open for its regular hours to accept other trash and recyclables. However, the attendants at the center will redirect anyone with large bulky items to the Karns Convenience Center. The new compactor should be up and running before next Saturday.

Our latest small business spotlight video featured Mayo Garden Center. Mayo Garden Center, opened in 1878 on Gay Street as a seed store, now has three locations in Knox County. The stores offer a huge selection of every product needed to beautify a home’s exteriors, from lawnmowers and trimmers to seasonal flowers and foliage, patio furniture, and outdoor grills.

Read City USA is zooming right along with 850,000 hours read. Remember, our goal is to reach 1 million hours by the end of the year. You can help by visiting the Read City USA website, downloading the Bean Stack Tracker app and logging your family’s reading hours.

Speaking of reading, don’t forget about the Knox County Public Library's Explorer Pass program which launched this summer with free tickets to Zoo Knoxville. Since that time, most of the Historic Homes of Knoxville and area cultural attractions have joined the program offering free or reduced admission with a valid library card.

This week, the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and the Library are pleased to announce a partnership for free child admission to each performance in the Moxley Carmichael Masterworks Series and Chamber Classics Series with the purchase of an adult ticket. Go to knoxreads.com/pass for more information.

This week’s Eat & Greet was Archers BBQ on Rutledge Pike. Next Friday, I’ll be at Sam & Andy’s in Fountain City at noon to help them celebrate their 75th anniversary. I hope you can join me.

Until next Friday, I hope everyone has a great week.”
